Romeo Gacad: An international Figure
“Romeo Gacad majored in visual communication at the College of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines where he became a photographer for the Philippine Collegian.”

“Gacad joined Agence France-Presse in 1985 and covered three US wars: the 1991 Gulf War, the 2001 war in Afghanistan and the 2003 invasion of Iraq where he spent 41 days as an embedded photographer in the US Army 3rd Infantry Division. Gacad’s coverage of the 1988 Olympics, the 2001 war in Afghanistan and the 2003 Iraq war earned him Pulitzer nominations.”

“When not covering conflict or disaster, Gacad loves to shoot farms and nature. He produced his first book together with National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario in 1983, titled “Retrato at Recuerdos,” a black and white documentation of life in a peasant village in San Miguel, Bulacan. Gacad’s photographs have appeared in international publications and have graced the cover of Time and Newsweek magazines.”

Dear Sir:
I would like to get permission to use a drawing I have made from a photo by Romeo Gacad. It shows soldiers in Iraq huddling to pray before thery go into combat. The drawing wil be used in the front of a book by pastor Bob Miller which he has written as a survival manual for young pastors. Can you direct me as to how I proceed? If A.F.P. has the rights to the photo please direct me to someone I can communicate with.
Sincerely,
Phillip L Bruner

I had the honor and privilege to work along side this man we fondly called “tata Romy”.
It has been nine years since those giddy crazy time in Jolo were I covered a hostage crisis as a stringer and translator. I bunked with the AFP boys and “tata Romy”.
One of the coolest journalist in the world. Always calm and composed even under extreme pressure. I’ll never forget that time when he firmly refused to hand-over his Cambodian scarf to an Abu-Sayyaf thug in Talipao Sulu. His photographs are powerful and timelessly relevant.
